Champions League: Final Preview

On May 26th in Kiev, Ukraine the Champions League Final will be contested between Real Madrid and Liverpool, and based on their roads so far there should be plenty of goals and entertainment. But before we get to my prediction for this huge game, let’s take a brief look at how each team navigated their tough Semi-Final matchup.

Liverpool 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 7-6 Roma 🇮🇹

After blitzing Roma to the tune of a 5-2 home victory, led by Salah and Firmino both grabbing 2Gs and 2As, it ended up being a close finish scorewise as a pair of late strikes for the home side in the return leg in Rome made it look closer than it probably was as Liverpool were the better team overall. Still nobody seems to be able to stop their vaunted front three.

Real Madrid 🇪🇸 4-3 Bayern Munich 🇩🇪

After taking an impressive first leg 2-1 win on Bayern’s home turf it seemed like Real would put this one away comfortably in the second leg but someone forgot to tell Bayern that. It was a spirited 2-2 draw in the end that saw Real advance but Bayern pushed them to the brink with a huge late push. Unfortunately for the Bayern keeper, his terrible mistake ended up costing his side dearly. Ronaldo was particularly quiet, but maybe saving it up for the Final?

Ok, here we go, the big one…

Real Madrid 🇪🇸 v Liverpool 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

The fact that Madrid are here is not all that surprising to me as they have the players, the coach and the pedigree. Their run was certainly a tough one as they faced PSG, Juventus and Bayern in the knockout phase, does it get much more difficult than that? Ronaldo has really come on strong in the second half of the season and you could just see him having a big impact on the final result here. For Liverpool their road was a bit easier as they handled Porto easily, then impressively beat one of the favorites in Man City, before dispatching of Roma. No surprises who has led the way, Mo Salah is having an incredible goal scoring season, and when you add in Firmino and Mané you have a devastating front three with tons of pace and skill to trouble the Real rearguard. After correctly predicting the previous round it is time to get to my Final prediction. Drumroll…

Pick: Real Madrid 3-2 Liverpool, and for some fun here are the scorer picks, for Real (Ronaldo, Benzema and Ramos…he may get a Red too!) and for Liverpool (Salah, Mané).

That about wraps it up, all that is left is to organize some friends to meet up at a pub and the rest will take care of itself. Enjoy the match!
